DISCO Corporation (Headquarters: Ota-ku, Tokyo; President: Kazuma Sekiya), a semiconductor processing equipment manufacturer, was awarded third place in “Best Workplaces in 2021,” produced by the Great Place to Work® Institute Japan (GPTW*JAPAN). DISCO has ranked in for this award for 13 consecutive years.
GPTW defines a great place to work as a place where employees “trust the people they work for,” “have pride in what they do,” and “experience camaraderie with their colleagues.” GPTW investigates the company’s culture, environment, and employee opinion against the five dimensions of a Great Place to Work—“credibility,” “respect,” “fairness,” “pride,” and “camaraderie”—and then evaluates the company holistically. This time, DISCO was recognized in particular for its “credibility,” “respect,” and “fairness.”

DISCO believes that improving the “quality of relationships” is important in increasing employee job satisfaction and is working on various activities to promote this. For example, in 2016, a system was implemented in which each department introduces its activities for promoting “quality of relationships” at inter-department presentation battles and employees then vote on the best ideas. By gamifying the battles with voting, this system has promoted comprehension of quality of relationship activities and made them easier to implement across departments.
Because this system awards points based on the outcome and publicizes the rank of each department, it naturally fosters a competitive environment. In addition, DISCO is working on creating a workplace that promotes employee satisfaction through activities such as the development and introduction of an app that allow employees to praise one another for work results, attitude, and collaboration.
Activities promoting employee satisfaction are being carried out not only in Japan but also at the overseas affiliate offices. DISCO HI-TEC TAIWAN CO., LTD. was certified as a Top 10 Best Workplace in Taiwan on September 9, 2020, and DISCO HI-TEC KOREA Corporation was certified as a Top 100 Best Workplace in South Korea on January 28, 2021.
The Great Place to Work® Institute conducts surveys, analyses, and evaluations in more than 60 countries around the world based on universal standards and announces a “Best Workplace Ranking" in each country. In Japan, the survey has been conducted and results announced since 2007.
